Computer Gaming: Is It Bad For Us?

One thing that many people have an opinion on, is whether or not computer gaming is bad for us and this seems to be a hotly debated topic with no sign of a resolution. People who love gaming will defend it vehemently while those who are against gaming will continue to attack it viciously.

It is easy for each side to dismiss the other but in fairness the arguments from both sides can be persuasive. This article does not intend to try and find a solution to the argument but rather to have a look at both sides.

Gaming and the Arguments Against it

The arguments against computer gaming can be basically put under the umbrella that they somehow negatively impact our lives. The two most persuasive arguments about how they do this will be considered here. Gaming is viewed as making people a bit disassociated from reality; if they play games enough then they might begin to confuse reality for game.

The other argument that carries some weight against gaming is that it makes us more violent. What we input into our minds is similar to the food we put in our belly junk in leads to junk out.

The Argument for Computer Gaming

There are many pro-gamers who feel that those opposed to gaming are just scare-mongers out to cause damage and hysteria. Of the very few incidences where gaming has been cited as a cause for violence, the people involved were very unstable anyway. The dissociative argument can be debunked by the evidence that so many gamers are highly functioning sociable people.

Of course the killer argument is that gaming provides so much fun, and if something makes life more enjoyable then it should be fine. One thing I will say however, is that like everything else, gaming is something that should be done in moderation.
