Prepare To Stand Up Off Of The Sofa With Xbox Kinect

November 4, 2010 saw the release of Microsoft’s Xbox Kinect system. The system, available now from 30,000 plus retailers, is unique in that it’s the first video game system that’s 100 percent controller-free.

Since it’s controller-free, you don’t have to press a single button in order to play a Kinect game. That’s because when you activate the Kinect sensor, your body motions and voice become the control interface for the game.

A webcam-style sensor, placed on top of or below your TV, is what makes the system able to capture your movement and voice. It’s also able to sense your location in 3D space, which means it’s able to tell how far away from or how close you are to your TV.

All of this is made possible through the inner technological workings of the Kinect sensor. More specifically, these inner technological workings include a multi-array microphone, RGB camera, and depth sensor.

The RGB camera and depth sensor provide 3D motion capture of the entire body, as well as facial recognition capabilities. The multi-array microphone is what delivers the voice recognition feature of Xbox Kinect, and also allows for voice chat sans headset.

The Xbox Kinect isn’t just for the hardcore gamer, either. Last holiday season, there were 17 Kinect games on the market covering a broad range of categories: dance, racing, fitness, sports, and family fun.

If a multiplayer Kinect game with plenty of minigames full of exciting action sounds good to you, try “Kinect Adventures.” Even better, if you purchase the Xbox 360 with Xbox Kinect bundle, it comes as a bonus in the package!

One of these action-packed “Kinect Adventures” minigames has your character stranded in an underwater glass cube that’s full of leaks. The objective of the game is to survive by plugging them all using your limbs and head (move your own limbs and head to do this). In a different minigame, your character floats in zero gravity and you have to pop the bubbles that travel through the room. To help accomplish your goal, you’re given the ability to gain altitude in the zero-gravity environment by flapping your arms. To stay level, instead of gaining altitude, all you have to do is hold your arms out and away from your body.

That’s just one of the games available. If that sounds exciting, and you’re ready for a new kind of gaming experience based on innovative, exciting technology, check out the Xbox Kinect. With the all the different types of games available, the Xbox Kinect gets the whole family involved and having fun, from little kids to moms and dads!
