The Playstation 3 isn’t as stricken with bad reliability as the Xbox 360 is. However, this isn’t to say there are no problems. In fact, the PS3 suffers from its own equivalent of the Xbox 360′s Red Ring Of Death. The Yellow Light Of Death signifies a general hardware failure within the console and offers only an option to send it to Sony for a replacement or fix. Fortunately, some enterprising individuals and groups have come up with many fixes. Here is a possible PS3 YLOD fix.
Formatting The Hard Disk
The Playstation’s hard disk is known to cause some issues. When installing a game, it’s possible for the Yellow Light Of Death to appear. A possible solution to this requires some knowledge of removing the Playstation 3′s hard disk and formatting on your personal computer. As a disclaimer, be aware that all of your save games, downloaded content and other data on your hard disk will be lost with this method.
Go to the official Sony knowledge center and procure the system software for the console. This is necessary for the last steps. Without it, this fix cannot be applied successfully.
Remove the Playstation 3 hard disk and connect it to your available personal computer. Find ‘My Computer’ and select ‘Manage’ from the right click list. In the new window, an option for ‘Disk Management’ is available. Click on this and find the Playstation 3 hard disk. Right click on it and select a format. From here, a quick FAT32 or NTFS format will suffice. Once complete, reinsert the PS3 hard drive back into the console.
Reinsert the PS3 disk into the console and boot it up. It will ask for the system software (which you downloaded onto the pendrive). Plug it in and hope that your problems really did lie in the hard drive. While some YLOD errors are down to actual hardware breakage, some are simply malfunctions in the hardware, like this one.
