There are few games out there that define and entire genre of game, and Manic Miner is one of those games. Manic Miner was quite possible the first real platform game, with more than one screen to play on as you progressed through each of the levels. And not only did it have more than just one level – between the different versions of the game, there were hundreds of levels available for you to play and enjoy. I was very excited, and completely impressed that it was a game that some hard working, home brew developers decided to remake for the Nintendo DS / 3DS XL system. The game itself was released as a 3ds home brew game, which means it won’t cost you a cent. But you do need to have an R4 3DS card – a home brew nds flash card, in order to be able to load and play the game.
In Manic Miner you become the main character, called Miner Willy, and you must help him get through some very bizarre journeys and difficult levels in this great platform game. Levels filled with killer penguins and snapping toilets that are out to get you, and will, unless the mutant telephones reach you first. The game is a true platform game, where you must time your jumps and proceed with caution to ensure that you don’t run into one of these bad guys.
As you make your way to the more advanced levels and stages of the game, it will become increasing difficult and getting past the bad guys, as bizarre as they may be, will become a lot more difficult than you would think. For a 3ds home brew game, Manic Miner is right up there with some of the best commercial games that have been released for the Nintendo DS and 3DS. While the original Manic Miner, not the sequel, had only about 20 levels, this cool R4 3DS card remake has over 150 different levels to play. It will keep you entertained for a long, long time.
The music and effects in this game are also top quality. Graphically, there are two different modes. The original classic look and feel of the game, which I love to play, even if for nostalgia’s sake – and the updated levels and graphics show off the abilities of the designers themselves. With excellent Nintendo DS quality graphics and animations, old fans of Manic Miner, and new gamers alike will keep playing and playing until the game has been completed.
If you have an R4 3DS Card, then make sure you do not miss this free 3ds home brew game, it’s a must have game that should be in any collection – even if it weren’t free. And if you don’t have an R4 3DS, then get out there and get one. Once you do get your own R4, you will have access to all of the free 3ds home brew games, and there are lots of them out there, all just waiting for your to play them.
