Nintendo became a household name in the early 80s when they released their Nintendo Entertainment System NES. They entered the market back then at a crucial moment. The industry of gaming consoles was actually in a kind of crisis after several Atari gaming consoles failed miserably. There were those who were predicting that the era of gaming consoles was at its end.
That was when Nintendo came along and gave the NES or the Nintendo Entertainment System to the world. It was like the video gaming industry got a new lease of life because of that. Nintendo became the industry leader right away after that. They solidified their leadership by releasing other excellent products such as the Super NES and the N64. They also came out with several titles that has become iconic in gaming.
Years would pass before the leadership of Nintendo was even challenged. That happened only when PlayStation and Microsoft released their own video gaming consoles that used CDs instead of cartridges. That development was not much in the eyes of consumers at first, in fact it might have been seen as a drawback since discs were more liable to be damaged, but the developers felt the advantages of it right away and they started using it.
Nintendo did not respond to the challenged posed by the devices right away and when they did it was a half-hearted effort at best. They released the Game Cube which is not much. For me that is the start of the decline of Nintendo. Their refusal to adapt to the changes that are happening to the world of gaming can only end up with the company cutting off all possible means of bailing itself out in the future.
The biggest evidence of this refusal to use these changes to their advantage are their efforts to block the use and sale of the r4 cards for their devices. They are still refusing to make any adaptations that will allow them to use different business models.
